Destination CLT Projects Move Forward

Nov. 22, 2022 - Destination CLT, the Airport’s $3.1 billion capital investment program, is making major headway with three large projects in the works.

Terminal Lobby Expansion

The Airport’s upper-level roadway partially reopened Oct. 10 after temporarily closing on Sept. 27 for the Terminal Lobby Expansion’s (TLE) canopy construction. Crews were able to begin installing trusses to support what will eventually be the equivalent of 2½ football fields of glass over the Departures/Ticketing roadway.

Over the next 18 months, the upper-level roadway will close nightly to continue canopy construction and reopen during the day. Meanwhile, steel and concrete slab installation continues on the TLE’s east side, which is scheduled to open to the public late next year.

Work also is underway behind construction walls on three new baggage claim carousels, concession spaces and bathrooms in Arrivals/Baggage Claim and new ticket counters in Ticketing/Departures. The entire Terminal Lobby Expansion will wrap up in 2025.

Concourse A Expansion Phase II

Construction of Concourse A Expansion Phase II broke ground in May. Since then, work has been ongoing on the project’s foundation, utilities and installation of columns to hold up the expansion’s first floor.

Slabs have been poured for the ramp level floor as well. When complete in fall 2024, the expansion will add 191,848-square-feet and 10 gates to Concourse A.

Fourth Parallel Runway

CLT’s fourth parallel runway is in the preliminary design phase.

The final design will be completed in summer 2024. It will be built between the current 18R/36L and 18C/36C runways. Construction will start in 2023 with mass grading and conclude in mid-summer 2027 with a late fall commissioning that year.
