Terminal Entry, Exit Doors Changing in August

Passengers coming and going from Charlotte Douglas International Airport will notice new ways to enter and exit the terminal beginning in August and continuing into 2022.

Construction on the Terminal Lobby Expansion is moving into a new phase and doors that people are using will be changing. Signage will help guide passengers, who are reminded to plan ahead for their travels. Navigating around construction will be necessary.

The Terminal Lobby Expansion is a $600 million project to expand and renovate CLT’s Ticketing and Baggage Claim. The work will transform the Airport entrance and create more space in Departures/Ticketing and Arrivals/Baggage Claim. The Airport broke ground on the five-year signature project on Dec. 10, 2019. Work, which will be complete in 2025, is part of Destination CLT, a $2.5-billion to $3.1-billion capital investment to accommodate passenger growth through 2035.

The upcoming changes involve some doors being closed, construction of a new pedestrian walkway and new interior passageways intended to shield people from the construction going on around them.

Terminal lobby construction to date has primarily been on the building’s west end. Beginning in mid-August, the work shifts to the east side, nearest to Checkpoint E.

To accommodate the switch, the following door changes will take effect Wednesday, Aug. 18:

  • Ticketing level: Existing Door 3 remains open. A new Door 1 (west end passageway) opens along with a new passenger bridge from the Upper Roadway on the east end nearest Checkpoint E.
  • Baggage Claim level: Existing Door 3 remains open and a new Door 1 with passageway opens on the terminal’s west end.

Existing outdoor smoking areas will be relocated due to the construction.

In late September, Door 3 is scheduled to close. Additional corridors on the Ticketing and Baggage Claim levels will open. More information will be provided as that construction nears.
