Winter Storm Jonas Impacts January Passenger and Operations Numbers
March 16, 2016 - Charlotte Douglas International Airport served 3,279,917 passengers in January, a 4 percent decrease compared to 3,403,970 fliers in January 2015. The decline is attributed to the arrival of Winter Storm Jonas January 22-23. Ice, snow and freezing rain from the storm forced several carriers to cancel flights over the two-day period.
As a result, operations handled 42,455 landings and departures, a 5 percent dip compared to 44,769 aircraft movements in January 2015.
International passenger traffic slipped to 178,098 fliers traveling abroad.
Cargo remained relatively steady only decreasing 0.2 percent from 10,727 tons in January 2015 to 10,701 tons in January 2016.
