New Electric Buses Create a Buzz

CLT is going electric again. This spring, five new electric shuttle buses will hit the road, transporting passengers to and from the terminal. As part of the Aviation Department’s Comprehensive Sustainability Plan, the Airport is replacing its 57 diesel-powered buses with 50 electric buses within the next seven to 10 years.

The buses are 100% battery-electric, burn zero diesel fuel and emit zero emissions. Other advantages over diesel buses are a reduction in noise, fewer auto parts, lower operating costs, a lifespan of 12 years versus 10 years and a smoother, quieter ride for passengers.

New Flyer, a Canadian company, manufactured the buses in Aniston, Ala.

CLT’s transition toward electric buses supports the City of Charlotte’s Strategic Energy Action Plan (SEAP), which strives to have city fleet and facilities fueled by 100 percent zero-carbon sources by 2030. The first five electric buses, manufactured by Greenville-based Proterra, were introduced in October 2020. Together the 10 buses equate to a $100,000 yearly savings in diesel fuel for Charlotte Douglas.

The New Flyer buses currently have a white exterior but will be wrapped this summer with the same electrical theme and markings as the Proterra buses.

The Aviation Department, which operates CLT for the City of Charlotte, has chosen to embrace and incorporate various sustainable approaches into its daily operations. Sustainability initiatives at CLT have included the installation of solar panels, energy-efficient systems, electric vehicle charging stations, the use of alternative fuel vehicles and recyclable building materials.

The Club CLT Offers Comfort, a Taste of Charlotte

The Club CLT, an Airport Dimensions lounge, opened today (March 30, 2022) offering a full-service menu with locally inspired dishes and a relaxing space to unwind before your flight.

The 4,800-square-foot lounge, located on Concourse A Expansion, also features free Wi-Fi service, comfortable seating, private workspaces and great views of the airfield.

It is the first common-use lounge at CLT, meaning it’s not limited to particular passengers or airline customers. Guests pay $45 for a day to use the lounge. Entry is complimentary to Priority Pass members and discounted rates for AAA members.

Airport Dimensions has a network of over 40 airport lounges and sleep experiences in the United States, United Kingdom and the Middle East to provide passengers a unique and personalized travel experience.

Also opening this spring are Dunkin in the Atrium, Gameway (gaming stations) and Upton Exchange (news and gifts) both on Concourse E Expansion Phase 9.

Common Space (counterculture coffee) on the D/E Connector and a local favorite Sycamore Brewing located in Concourse E Expansion are planning a summer debut. This fall passengers can begin ordering the chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches and fresh salads at PDQ on Concourse E Expansion.

Wall Murals Capture Beauty of the Tar Heel, Palmetto States

“Scenes from the Carolinas” have turned CLT construction walls into visual canvases showcasing the beauty of the Carolinas.

The wall graphics feature images from throughout North and South Carolina on the upper and lower-level passenger entrances to Ticketing and Baggage Claim.

Mountain scenery adorns the upper level, and coastal locations enhance the lower level. Scenic vistas include the Outer Banks, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Beach Head Island, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Chimney Rock and Great Smokey Mountains Railroad. The images, which were installed in February, also have been helping with wayfinding by providing passengers a point of reference for their location within the terminal. They make picture-perfect selfie stations as well.

Airport Receives GBAC recertification

Charlotte Douglas International Airport earned Star Facility recertification from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) in February. The recertification recognizes CLT has implemented the most stringent protocols for cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention in its facilities.

CLT first received GBAC certification in December 2020 by demonstrating compliance with GBAC’s 20 core elements, which ranged from standard operating procedures and risk assessment strategies to personal equipment and emergency preparedness and response measures.

The annual recertification process focused on the Airport’s program development over the past year and goals for the upcoming year. Currently, 31 airports in the country have GBAC certification.
