Runway 5K Raises Money for College Scholarships

Nov. 22, 2022 - The Airport’s 2022 Runway 5K raised $38,810 for Airport Opportunity Scholarships at Central Piedmont Community College.

The funds will allow three local students to attend college for free, covering tuition, books and providing internship opportunities. The Aviation Department created the scholarships in 2018 to promote careers in aviation and economic opportunities in Charlotte.

The Runway 5K on Oct. 22 drew 1,241 registered participants to CLT’s airfield. The men’s and women’s winners were Christopher Zuerner with a time of 15:27 and Sara Diaz who crossed the finish line in 19:18. Both Charlotte residents received American Airlines flight certificates. Omega Sports certificates were presented to runners who won their age group.

Since 2007, over 22,000 people have participated in the Runway 5K, which has raised more than $280,800 for local nonprofit agencies and college scholarships.

CLT’s Runway 5K offers a unique, flat course entirely on the airfield with two miles of runway and a close-up look of aircraft landing and taking off. Participants get amazing views of the Airport’s terminal complex and the Uptown Charlotte skyline.
