Destination CLT Plans Big Milestones

Nov. 22, 2021 - Destination CLT, the Airport’s $2.5 to $3.1 billion capital improvement program, will celebrate two milestones next year with the debut of the Terminal Lobby Expansion’s west side and the opening of Concourse E Expansion Phase 9.

TERMINAL LOBBY EXPANSION

The Terminal Lobby Expansion is 25% complete and remains on schedule to be completed in 2025.

Roofing is nearing completion on the Terminal Lobby Expansion’s west side. Work is ongoing for interior walls, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Glass installation for the exterior curtain wall wraps up this month.

The new construction on the lobby’s west side will open to passengers in spring/summer 2022, along with the west subterranean walkway – an underground tunnel that will connect the Hourly Deck to the terminal, allowing CLT visitors to bypass roadway traffic. Work on the east subterranean tunnel will begin in 2023 and wrap up in 2025. Charlotte Douglas also is adding two pedestrian overhead walkways that will allow access from level five of the Hourly Parking Deck to the Mezzanine inside the new terminal lobby.

The $608 million TLE is the largest construction project in Airport history. It will add 366,000 square feet of new and renovated space to the front of the terminal, along with an architecturally stunning canopy to welcome visitors for decades.

Customer amenities will include modern ticket counters, eight original artworks, charging stations and five pre-security concession spaces.

Concourse E Phase 9

CLT’s Concourse E Expansion Phase 9 will add 34,00 square feet, hold room space for 10 gates, a Pet Relief Area, Mother’s Room, restrooms and four new concessions (Uptown Exchange, Gameway, PDQ and Sycamore Brewing) on Concourse E’s north end in early 2022

Work has started on terrazzo flooring. Main electricity has been brought to the site.  Currently, crews are installing air conditioning, lighting fixtures, drywall and wall finishes.
